How To Speed Up Your Recycling

Recycling is a great way to contribute to a greener Planet Earth. Even small scale efforts, like recycling plastic bottles, glass and aluminum cans are helpful. Of course, you can also make a little bit of spending cash by recycling the bottles and cans from your own home. There are many recycling centers in strip malls and attached to grocery stores. These facilities specialize in plastic and aluminum. These are far more convenient than industrial recycling centers that handle commercial loads of a wider range of recyclables. If you are just recycling a few trash bags full of soda cans and wine bottles, you should look for these smaller, consumer-friendly centers. This article explains the best recycling techniques and how to maximize your return.

Segregate Your Plastic, Glass and Aluminum

Is always a good idea to segregate your recyclables before you go to the center. Put them all in their own plastic bag. Also, make sure they are completely empty and dry. This means you might need to remove all of the lids. Most recycling centers will take a small percentage off of your earnings if your bags are wet. They do this as a security measure because many customers tempted to leave a little bit of liquid in their cans and bottles. Imagine, a plastic water bottle that is 1/3 full of water will probably weigh as much as about 10 empty bottles. The recycling center attendance are trained to look out for wet bottles. So you are better off to ensure that your stuff is as dry as possible.  This is why it might not be worth taking your recyclables in after a rain storm if you have stored your bags outside.

When You Get to The Recycling Center

If you know what to do when you get to the recycling center, you can also speed up the process. First of all, wear disposable latex gloves because this is not the most sanitary environment. You will need to transfer all of your recyclables into the provided containers that they used to weigh. At this point, you will be extremely glad if you already segregated the glass, plastic and aluminum.

Some recycling centers have machines. These will probably give you a greater return for your recyclables, but they take a while to use because you need to put the pieces in one by one. Also, these machines only work if the items are not crushed. So, if you only have 100 or so items, it might be worth using the machine. But if you have several large bags, you should just have your stuff weighed.
